7 Surprising Ways to Stop Wasting Food and Turn Leftovers Into Family Favourites

To celebrate our Zero Waste event on Wednesday, 30th July, with Michelin trained chef Rowen Halstead, we’re sharing seven simple ways to cut food waste in your kitchen.

Not only will these tips help you save money, but they’ll inspire you to get creative with what’s already in your fridge and cupboards.

True or false? Bananas live longer in the fridge?

Apples do, bananas don’t!

Keep them in your fridge, but if they start to soften, chop them up and freeze them to add to porridge or smoothies!

Bananas starting to go brown? Slice and freeze them for smoothies or, for a sweet treat, dip them in melted chocolate, refreeze, and enjoy as a chewy snack.

Citrus fruits and berries can also be sliced and frozen to chill drinks without watering them down with ice!

Butter, milk, and cream can all be frozen if you’re running out of fridge space or heading on holiday. You won’t know the difference when you defrost them.

Love tomatoes? If they’re looking a little worse for wear, they might be too soft for salad so freeze them and you can drop a handful straight into soups, bolognese, or chilli. You can even cook them first to make defrosting or cooking time quicker.

We’re not saving roasties for just Sunday anymore! Parboil your potatoes, shake them to fluff up the edges, let them cool, then freeze in a bag. When you’re ready for a midweek roast, cook them straight from frozen (yes, really!) for perfectly crisp results with zero effort.

It’s time to have some fun! Look at what you’ve got in your fridge and cupboards and get creative! Ask Google what you could make out of what you have, and roll us those sleeves! You could be amazed at what you create! Make sure you write it down if you like the result! You never know, you could hit on a new regular favourite for your household!

Chop fresh herbs and garlic and freeze them into ice cube trays with oil. They are bursting with taste, and you can drop them straight into your dishes for instant flavour!

Did you know you can pick up perfectly good food from Still Good Food? You’ll find things like fruit and veg, fresh bread, rolls, pastries, and even luxury frozen gravy. You can help yourself and donate what you can. It’s a great way to save food from being wasted while supporting the community. We think you’ll be amazed at the choice available.
