5 Simple Ways to Reduce Food Waste at Home. The Still Good Food Way.

As we continue to celebrate Bury Beautiful World at arc, we’re thrilled to shine a light on our incredible Charity Partner of the year, Still Good Food. They believe that good food should never go to waste, especially when it can nourish families who are going without.

Each year in the UK, millions of tonnes of edible food are thrown away. That’s food that could be on plates, not in bins. Still Good Food’s mission is to rescue surplus food and make it available to the people of Bury St Edmunds through their market shop, pop-ups, and community events. But change doesn’t have to be executed through extravagant events, it can happen in your humble home!

Here are five simple ways you can join Still Good Food in reducing Food Waste today:

The easiest way to waste less? Buy only what you need. Take a few minutes each week to plan your meals, check your cupboards and fridge before shopping, and make a list. You’ll save money and reduce the risk of food going off before you get to it.

Even better, use up what you already have by building your meals around those nearly-expired items or forgotten tins at the back of the cupboard.

Think of your freezer as a pause button for food. Almost anything can be frozen, from bread and milk to leftover stew or overripe bananas. If you’re not going to use it in time, freeze it and enjoy it later.

Still Good Food sees a lot of surplus food wasted simply because it’s nearing a date, but much of it is still perfectly good and can be saved with a little planning.

Turn yesterday’s roast into today’s soup or use sad-looking veg in a stir-fry. Blend soft fruit into smoothies or bake them into muffins. Lovely leftovers are a chance to be inventive! You never know, you might just find your new favourite meal.

By shopping with Still Good Food, you’re helping to rescue good food from going to waste. Whether you pick up a bag of veg from their shop or donate time as a volunteer. Every small action helps them make a big impact in Bury St Edmunds.

Even the best planning can leave behind peels, cores, or scraps. Instead of binning them, you could start a compost bin! It’s a brilliant way to turn food waste into something that gives back, nourishing the soil and helping future food grow.

Still Good Food see the potential in every loaf, apple, and carrot. And when you choose to waste less at home, you become part of a movement that’s good for your wallet, your wellbeing, your community, and the planet.

Loyal neighbours on the same mission.

Still Good Food rescue food that would otherwise go to waste. At Jubilee Farm, just down the road, they grow it in a way that protects the soil, nourishes people, and respects the planet. Together, they’re working towards a future where good food is valued at every stage from field to fork.

Jubilee Farm’s approach to growing with nature, distributing locally, and offering flexible, fair payment models means more people in Bury St Edmunds can access organic, chemical-free food without barriers. Just as Still Good Food believes no food should go to waste, Jubilee Farm believe no one should be priced out of healthy, sustainable produce.

By supporting local initiatives, you’re helping to build a food system rooted in dignity, care, and community, where what’s grown well and what’s rescued with love can all serve a greater purpose.

We’re thrilled to be highlight both of these incredible organisations that are making Bury St Edmunds and beyond a much brighter, less wasteful place.
